AFL Betting Markets Explained Australia
How AFL markets are assembled - head to head, line, totals, multis and futures - and how the ten-club finals and drawn-final rules change the numbers.
Visit TopSport →AFL markets use the same frame as the other codes - head to head on the winner, a line that gives one club a points start, totals on the combined score, and multis or Same Game Multi that bundle legs into one bet - but the numbers are much larger, because a goal is worth six points and a behind one. The 2026 season also redrew the futures picture: the finals run five weeks with ten clubs in contention, the top six going straight into the eight and seventh to tenth playing off in the Wildcard Round. Drawn finals are settled by additional three-minute periods rather than a replay, so a final always produces a winner. This is a structural description on an independent guide site; TopSport took sports and racing bets only, and its accounts have run on the betr platform since 2025.
How AFL betting markets are structured
- The AFL is an 18-club competition. In 2026 each club played a 23-match home-and-away season across 25 rounds, followed for the first time by a five-week finals series with ten clubs still in contention.
- The Wildcard Round, new in 2026 and played in late August, replaced the pre-finals bye weekend: the top six go straight through to the final eight, while seventh hosts tenth and eighth hosts ninth in knockout games for the last two places. Futures on making the eight now turn on two matches that did not exist before.
- A goal is six points and a behind is one, so AFL lines and totals are set far higher than in the other codes and one goal can move a line either way. Play runs over four quarters of twenty minutes plus time-on, which means the real length of a quarter varies from game to game.
- A drawn home-and-away match stands as a draw, but a drawn final is no longer replayed: after a short break, two three-minute halves plus time-on are played, and if scores are still level the process repeats until a result is reached. The Grand Final is played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
